 Public Transport

Singapore’s public transport system is one of the best in the world, so you should have no problem finding your way around like a local. There are the three main forms of public transport that you would find in any other major city:

MRT - Trains
Trains run from 6am to midnight. You can find the MRT map here. Single trip tickets start at 80c. For $15 you can buy an EZ-Link card that will give you a $10 value to ride the trains and buses all you like. When you leave, just cash in the remaining value at any MRT station. If you need more information, just call TransitLink on 1800 767 4333.

Buses
There are several bus services in Singapore and fares start at 80c. Be sure to always ask the driver the cost of your ticket as he can not give change. For $15 you can buy an EZ-Link card that will give you a $10 value to ride the trains and buses all you like. When you leave, just cash in the remaining value at any MRT station. If you need help finding something, just call TransitLink on 1800 767 4333 for the bus number you need.

Taxis
There are three main taxi companies – CityCab (6552 2222), Comfort (6552 1111) and Tibs (6555 8888). Flag fall starts at $2.10 for Tibs (off-peak), while CityCab and Comfort charge $2.40. Surcharges then apply. One such surcharge is a 50 per cent one that applies after midnight until 6am. Bookings can also be made easily by calling the numbers listed above. For bookings, Comfort charges an extra $3.20, CityCab $3, and Tibs charges $3.20 until midnight when it becomes free until 6am.

When hiring a taxi, you will notice that driving within the city area is more expensive due to the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP). Singapore employs the ERP system to avoid overcrowding on its roads. While to most visitors it seems a rather complicated system to start with, it is easy to understand.

Basically, when using the roads in the inner city area and expressways during peak-hour times, you will have to pay a toll. But instead of having toll booths everywhere, Singapore has ERP gantries that will automatically deduct the price from a pre-paid cash card inserted above the taxi's steering wheel.
