VISUAL ART: Singapore Biennale 2006

Organized by the National Arts Council of Singapore in partnership with the National Heritage Board of Singapore, Singapore Biennale 2006 opened to the public on 4 September 2006. This major international contemporary art exhibition features more than 80 artists and artist collectives from over 35 countries. BELIEF is the theme for Singapore’s first visual arts biennale. Through a diverse selection of international contemporary art practices, including artists from Singapore and its neighbouring regions, the Biennale sets out to create a reflection rather than a representation of contemporary art’s relationship with the subject of belief.

THEATRE: Notre Dame de Paris

Based on Victor Hugo’s tale of Quasimodo and Esmeralda, Notre Dame de Paris has been a phenomenal success since it was unleashed in the French-speaking world. It attracted over 7.5 million spectators, breaking box-office records in France, Canada, Spain, Italy, Russia, Belgium and Switzerland. The musical is the creation of lyricist Luc Plamondon and composer Richard Cocciante, who have both won numerous awards for their works.

SPORTS: 59th Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby Sevens Tournament 2006

The SCC International Rugby Sevens is one of the world’s oldest club-level seven-aside rugby tournaments held annually since 1948. Described as the “Friendly Sevens”, it’s the premier international club tournament in the region, attracting top clubs from the Asia Pacific region, USA, Europe and Africa. Catch teams from New Zealand, Fiji, Kenya, South Africa, Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. There is a Rugby 7s Village for food, drinks and souvenirs. Enjoy a weekend of fun in the sun with high-speed, world-class rugby action.

SPORTS: Asian Poker Tour 2006

APT 2006 is an upscale 5-day knockout “No Limit Texas Hold’Em” poker tournament held in a luxury hotel ballroom in Singapore. The first international poker event ever staged in Asia, participants pay an entrance fee of USD$5000 to play for the guaranteed prize pool of USD$1 million.

THEATRE: A Bedfull of Foreigners

A Bedfull of Foreigners is a comedy which ran for over 600 performances in the West End and its international success has equalled that, with productions worldwide in over a dozen languages. Written by Dave Freeman, one of UK’s brightest comedy writers, this hilarious play is set in a French hotel in a small village and the hotel runs a la Fawlty Towers. There are all the ingredients associated with fast-moving farce, mistaken identities, a double-booked bedroom, inefficient staff and hasty cover-ups. Seductions and confrontations run rampant throughout this funny play, which provides excellent entertainment suitable for the entire family.

STAMPS: It’s Christmas
