EXHIBITION: From Words to Pictures: Art during the Emergency
Learn about the effects of the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960) on the local arts scene. This tumultuous period saw a series of social and political upheavels such as the Maria Hertogh Riots (1950), the Anti-Yellow Culture Movement in the early 1950s and the Hock Lee Bus Strikes (1955). This exhibition challenges audiences to ponder why particular artistic directions, genres and subject matter were adopted by artists during this period.
